an area called Mannarazza<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">. The <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">association, together with students and volunteers, follows the breeding success <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">of pairs <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">by monitoring approximately 500 nests annually. These nests have<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> been selected<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> for their accessibility<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> geo-referenced <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">and individually labelled <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">with a metal tag. For each nest, the two reproductive adults forming the pair were ringed and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">their biometric measurements<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> taken<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> (beak length, thickness, and weight of the animal<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">). The occupation of the nest by the same individuals or<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> new ones <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">is checked every year during the laying period <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">which starts <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">from<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> around<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> mid-May<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">. Moreover, for each pair\/nest we record<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\"> data on the laying date, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">hatching <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">date (starting from mid-July) and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">fledging of the juvenile (from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">mid-October<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">), which is ringed a couple of weeks earlier. In case of breeding failure, we take note of the causes that has determined it. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">These causes can be natural, such as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">an unfertilized egg, or <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223772560 BCX0\">caused by other factors, like predation by introduced species, such as rats and cats.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW223772560 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since 2010 when we have started the monitoring activities, 5486 shearwaters have been ringed (considering both adults and juveniles). About 2,000 shearwaters have been handled at least once. Of interest it is the female shearwater with ring TH4315 from nest 25, which has been handled 30 times in the last 15 years. The scientific name of this species has been recently updated and refers to birds nesting in the Mediterranean islands, separating them from those nesting in the Atlantic Ocean (Cory\u2019s shearwater or Atlantic shearwater) based on genetic differences. Shearwaters are philopatric, always returning to breed in the same colony, generally the one where they were born and once the breeding pair is formed, the individuals always return to the same nest. Shearwaters have long-lasting pair bonds. They lay one single egg per breeding season and both parents alternate in brooding and chick rearing. They are long-lived seabirds and can live up to 50 years! \nThey do not show sexual dimorphism, so it is not easy to distinguish the male from the female. The mermaids (i.e. shearwaters) with their irresistible nocturnal songs used to enchant and attract sailors towards the coast, with the risk to crash their boats on the rocks.
